There is something about Costa Rica that invites you to slow down. Maybe it is the sound of the ocean rolling onto the shore.
Maybe it is the green of the rainforest after a warm afternoon rain. Maybe it is seeing a scarlet macaw fly overhead or watching a sloth move quietly through the trees. Whatever it is, Costa Rica has a way of reminding you that life is still happening all around you—and that you are still part of it.
For those of us who have lived through cancer, surgery, an ostomy, medical trauma, or another life-changing experience, it can be easy to remain in survival mode. We learn to focus on appointments, supplies, symptoms, recovery, and the next problem that needs to be solved. Even when the crisis has passed, our minds and bodies may still be waiting for the next difficult moment.
Costa Rica Offers a Different Rhythm
Here, mornings begin with birdsong and warm sunlight. The air feels alive. The ocean encourages you to breathe deeper. The mountains, beaches, rivers, and jungles create space to step away from daily pressure and reconnect with yourself.
That is part of what makes Costa Rica such a meaningful setting for the StomaDad Wellness Retreat.
This retreat is not about pretending the difficult parts of life never happened. It is about recognizing everything you have survived while making room for what can come next. It is an opportunity to rest, reflect, learn, laugh, and spend time with people who understand that rebuilding confidence can take courage.
In Costa Rica, wellness does not have to mean pushing yourself harder. It can mean sitting near the water. Sharing a meal without rushing. Having an honest conversation. Taking a gentle walk. Trying something new. Or simply giving yourself permission to feel present again.
The Costa Rican phrase “Pura Vida” means more than “pure life.” It reflects a way of living with gratitude, connection, and appreciation for the moment you are in. For someone who has faced major change, that message can feel especially powerful.
You do not have to return to the person you were before illness, surgery, or trauma. You can become someone new—someone shaped by what happened but not limited by it.
Costa Rica cannot erase the past. But it can offer the space, beauty, and energy to help you look forward again.
Come breathe. Come reconnect. Come remember that your life is still yours to live.
Be Kind to Yourself.
